Zornhau Training
Hey all, here's how we train the Zornhau with specific focus on the Nachreisen and the ZornOrt.
We start by going over the movement slowly with focus on footwork and good form. The work on form is simple, maintaining good footing and body alignment in the cut so that at the point is aimed at the opponent, and you can absorb incoming force without falling over. To test this we do a push test which causes a student to adjust to the demands rather than prescribing a preconceived ideal.
In the next drill we practice applying the Zornhau Ort (or ZornOrt) against an opponent who either cuts from long range, or moves in with a closing Vorschlag. It is important to lean that using the same action you can deal with both situations. When the opponent cuts from long range you can use footwork to avoid their cut and exploit the opening to cut and if the opening remains, thrust.
If they move in, you don't try to evade, as that will create an opening for the opponent at this range, countercut, and thrust the opponent from the bind.
If the opponent closes with a cut and attempts to thrust you first, then you should Indes convert into a hard Winden and counter thrust them. By doing the Winden against their blade (making it a 'hard' as compared to moving with their cut which would be a 'soft' Winden) you displace their point and claim the center.
Each of these options teaches the student to apply a limited tool set to a varying range of opponent actions in an adaptive way.
